I created my slash and show technique
whilst a student at Glasgow School of Art and I have been refining
and developing it since.
I combine texture, colour and
design as the three elements that provide my alchemy. Different
textiles take dye differently, cut and fray differently and
absorb light differently. I like to combine these uncertain
factors in my work as a foil to the discipline and rigidity
of formal design. The clash of the two creates both tension
and a sense of serenity.
A textile is expected to behave
in a certain way, to be laid across a bed, to clothe and protect
from the elements or to flutter in the sky proclaiming a Nations
existence. My fabrics are there to be looked at in contrast
to their surroundings and to challenge the viewer to rethink
their perceptions of the function of fabric.
The very nature of my work in
which leather natural silks, wool’s and cottons are hand dyed,
sewn together in layers and hand cut defies the precision of
modern design, not detracting from it but complimenting it.
